I was one of artists.

Dubai has a big summer event called summer supply every year. They decided to have doll exhibition as one of events this year. This was the first experience for them to see many kinds of hand made dolls. People were very eager to see dolls and workshops. I was surprised how popular Japanese culture in Dubai was. Many people spoke to me in Japanese too.

I enjoyed sightseeing in Dubai during day. We worked from 16:00 p.m. to 22:00p.m. So, we had free time during day.

It was a big success. Many people asked me to come back to Dubai and why I didn't have a shop in Dubai. I would like to go back to Dubai if I have another chance.Chicohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06073401450283339722noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4145425370221052541.post-30012230457162567202009-04-16T18:52:00.003+09:002009-04-16T18:57:27.733+09:00The Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and ToysHello,

Our exhibition of Japanese Dolls and Toys is up and visitors are really
enjoying it. The Emperor was outraged and for his punishment, Yukihiro was banished to a remote island. He was sent there for three years.
While on the island he met two beautiful girls named Matsukaze and Murasame, whom he fell in love with.
Matsukaze and Murasame were “Shiokumi”. The name reflected their jobs which were to carry buckets of salt water. The salt water was later refined into salt. “Shiokumi” literally means “to carry salt water” It’s also the name of a traditional Japanese dance.
After Yukihiro 3 years of banishment were finished, he was permitted to return to the capital. He promised before leaving to return for both Matsukaze and Murasame someday. He wanted them to live on the mainland with him. Sadly, this promise went unfulfilled due to his untimely demise.
The sisters were greatly saddened by his death. They hung up the hat and hunting jacket he had left behind on a pine tree where they cried. While remembering him, they danced wearing his hat and jacket, while also carrying their water buckets.Chicohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06073401450283339722noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4145425370221052541.post-21438397647082349102008-11-05T09:34:00.003+09:002008-11-05T09:38:44.904+09:00Making sword demonstration<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjivsp8QdD7tjyj-OG1m9vivSS1-ub1DVY3ta_kET3ysV5SXYOIKraiQSn3rBJ4Bt9lkYrYnmOONguH0l0iZcCg_EpxEuioxyxse7qNHPnAbcZo-jUejH08XYc-mUWtvEIWVRzS9mJC3g0j/s320/IMG_2946.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5264966408462725842" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRFs01XHz-WweXWb-jHKWxuqNUom5L_ZH8fjldFzWO6O07SHX8oGbtmWXNyG018W24B0ZSePC6EP85XxMp5YBkM8vrPNp1bW4844v2dUoQ0ZqegV9IvSQPzkzT5nMhIkGIBWQmSL_jj8fn/s320/IMG_2941.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5264966298896928146" />
Seki is famous for making swords and cutlery. We export cutleries to the world. The history of making swords in Seki is over 700 years. Swords were used for wars a long time ago, but people buy them as decorations or to use for Martial arts nowadays. Swords are very beautiful art. Hollywood moves used swords made in Seki.

This time, I had a doll class in the morning and we went to see the sword demonstration.Chicohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06073401450283339722noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4145425370221052541.post-87032079783796710602008-10-13T11:26:00.009+09:002008-10-21T19:37:05.576+09:00Festivals<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe9mUfixHoktyjc7mrevbRpmxvp0t18Bqd1sMJ5IveOjhf5nJRoEb-JdtwtLCsLZ-ZXWNh2jDC7aGacjSiGMERzhu6Q-njB35wzFSy9QyFLRyWI94BDx5W9AHAA5MavgZ8x7NYlHOn9BbA/s320/IMG_2496.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256467027160104930" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC0vaPOvQ_504FFZSGZ6bhY6BnNPKcVTGDMdea2HJ7VGjCYYweaS_g916vKk5F3mQLO6Y84vCY-PpqhgL4_4NIHLkNIYAtX1K4xnupwBtDeyJQPjHOEthl3pJqKbc4ycxJNTV2OTlbUv7N/s320/IMG_2526.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256466876919324338" />

There are many festivals all of Japan around this time. We had cutlery festival in Seki and Japanese paper lantern festival in Mino.

I had a doll class on the 12th. My students came to Seki on the 11th and we went to see the sword making demonstration. And then, we went to see martial arts. While we were watching the martial arts, I saw some of my students. So, I suddenly decided to have dinner with them. We enjoyed shopping and eating festival food. At dinner time, 12 people came to my house. We ordered pizza and I made Indian curry, salad & brownies. It was not enough food for everyone, but all of us were very happy to be together. After dinner, we went to see Japanese paper lanterns to Mino. This year, I didn't make a lantern for the festival. One of my students, who was eager to make a lantern, left Japan last summer. So, I decided not to make a lantern this year. I will make a lantern with someone if I have that kind of student again. : ) But, it takes a long time to make a very nice lantern. The most difficult part would be to think of a unique design, I think. After that, the key would be time,how long we can work on one lantern. Everyone is busy, and I don't want to work on it alone. Anyway, the lanterns were very beautiful on the traditional street in Mino.

The next day, I had a class with 6 people. Some of them stayed at my hosue and some of them stayed at a inn in Seki. Everyone made beautiful dolls. People came from Osaka, Kobe,Takayama and Kani. It was a trip for them. I really enjoyed the class. I think that I will have a class when we have these festivals again.

If you would like to come to Seki in Japan, this time would be perfect time!! Come to Seki and join my class!! You would have a wounderful time!!

If you would like to see the pictures of lanterns...

http://washitoningyou.spaces.live.com

Japanese paper lantern festivalChicohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06073401450283339722noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4145425370221052541.post-23031165073747076782008-09-29T17:18:00.006+09:002008-09-30T19:50:06.581+09:00Doll Class 2008 has started<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4_231mmMZR1cem2FGVIviphNKUSXGj998sILp2SG-gYE4gq2k8BTOQLzEvtkdk2cGBhEsMb7Qtq9Xbrh-wzPW3603PCfvcgtSUletR95uuWs8YXXEBhgggm6FSa7WP-1xPB2g8Y1KBqTX/s320/IMG_2311.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251730697332393506" />
Andy made Tenaraiko and Temari

I had a long break time from a doll class. It is easier to hold classes in the winter because the doll room is on the third floor of my house. So in the summer it becomes very hot. But I didn't know how to start.Then, many emails from people overseas interested in making Japanese paper dolls made me open my etsy shop immediately. " Please teach me how to make a doll" " Your students make such beautiful dolls and I would like to make them too". Hummm, can I teach them only though email? They need deatail instructions. So, I started making eBook of Temari. It took me for a long time to complete the eBook. Then, some people bought Temari eBook and made them. He worked for Miyamoto Yoshisune. The time was during the Kamakura period. At large war was being fought named “Genpei no gassen.” The battle was between the armies Genji and Heike,

Yoritomo was the leader in the Genji army. Yoshitsune was his younger brother who was a leader under Yoritomo. Due to Yoshitsune’s leadership, the war was about to be won. Yoshitsune was a favorite of the Emperor. This also outraged his brother Yoritomo, who was consumed with jealousy.

Yoritomo stormed off to Yoshitsune’s residence in Kyoto to destroy his younger brother. Yoshitsune, Benkei and their samurais fled. As a result, Yoritomo built check-in gates to discover their whereabouts.

Benkei, Yoshitsune and his men disguised themselves as Yamabushi monks. There monks were not required to check-in at the gates. They were allowed to travel and teach their religion. The guards at all the check-points had become aware of Yoshitsune’s disguise though.

Yoshitsune, Benkei and his men were stopped at one of the check-points. They asked Benkei to read aloud the “Kanjin-choo”. This was a document with all the temple donations recorded on it. Of course they had no “Kanjin- choo”, so Benkei pulled out a blank scroll and pretended to read. They were then allowed passage。Yoshitsune and his men relived.

At this moment, one of the guards recognized Yoshitsune. One of the samurais suggested killing this man and moving on. Benkei instead had another idea. He struck his master with a metal rod and threatened to leave him behind. This was done in an attempt to fool the guards since no man would hit his master. Some stories suggest the guards were fooled, other say they were filled with compassion at this attempt to protect Yoshitsune. Either way, they were allowed to proceed.

This scene is popular in many Kabuki performances.Chicohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06073401450283339722noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4145425370221052541.post-40627604531711806762008-06-03T13:39:00.007+09:002008-12-09T08:10:46.866+09:00Oiran DochuKamuro: Rory and Shayne made

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkVmdt2QI98UGlNPvN_8slAet6uzsPLW2oARtOF8MrBZD3y8IeMPwyj2nTHIOIYP4MMhiePbkEinBZpAzNETvq_9p6y_GU9hXovfzzp-VajR4_5rAbNhm6hcGGRlwyYap3yhClaeZmHc14/s320/Kamuro+Shaybe+and+Rory+made+Kamuro.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5207515286059288994" />
Oiran and Kamuro.
Oiran is the name of the highest ranking prostitutes. She is holding a Temari ball.

Temari balls originated in China and introduced to Japan at the end of Heian Period (749 – 1185). Royal families played with Temari balls (They were used for Kickball).
From the beginning of Edo Period (1603 -1867), Temari balls were made by mothers and grand mothers for their children and grandchildren to play with. Historically they were made from the remnants of old Kimonos. As rime moved on traditional Temari balls became an art, with the functional stitching more and more decorative and detailed, until the balls displayed very intricate embroidery.

http://washitoningyou.spaces.live.com/phtos/Chicohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06073401450283339722noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4145425370221052541.post-86114544107174715322007-09-04T15:44:00.000+09:002008-12-09T08:10:47.963+09:00Katsuyama<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3vfpwoIQKxMUs4HvdAqXxMFPaf5IOwG1o8JbLSrBK4Qt5yIZ9rursoOiZLErCdhlfjDPL50CEpfz5SZV77F9G3j3iFIsYK9tBzlb-9CBDCM5UqJjh233rAS1KZhbtVWSjcOe8d8z6ZWrJ/s320/IMG_1256.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5106238170163237026" />
Melissa Sandvic made this doll

This doll's name is " Katsuyama". The name Oiran was used by only the highest ranking prostitutes. They learned to perform tea ceremonies, to play the “shamisen”, and write poetry. They were also skilled at “ Igo”, a type of Japanese Chess.
There were rules for spending a night with an Oiran. Just for the privilege of getting to know her came at a high price. This money was paid to the “Ochaya” which hired out Geishas.
Whenever customers met with an Oiran, they had to sit at her feet while she sat on an elevated platform. This was a sign of her higher rank over them.
When first meeting with Oiran, the customer sat at a far distance from the Oiran. No conversation, food, or drink was to be had. The customer was being scrutinized during this time. If he was judged worthy, he would be allowed another meeting. It was important for the customer to show their wealth. They did this by hiring numerous Geishas to impress the Oiran.
At the second meeting, the Oiran inched just a little closer to the customer. Still no interaction at this time.
Before the third meeting, a bowl and chopsticks were prepared with the customer’s name on them.
Finally, at the third meeting the customer was allowed to be intimate with Oiran. This privilege though cost an enormous amount of money.
After being intimate with his Oiran, he was not permitted to sleep with any other Oirans. If he tried, it would be reported back to his original Oiran.
On the occasion that the customer came on the same day as another customer, he was not allowed to sleep with her. He did though stay the night with an Oiran in training, though intimacy was not allowed. The usual high fee of sleeping with the Oiran was still charged.

Carol Hasegawa made this doll. (Princess Yaegaki) Princess Yaegaki was a heroine of a traditional puppet performance called Ningyou Joruri. The title of the performance is called " Honcho Nijushiko".
Princess Yaegaki is the character's name based on the story about Princess Kiku who was a daughter of Kenshin.
There were two famous Samurai lords named Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin. Their relationship became bad because of a special helmet which was an important treasure for Takeda Shingen. He received it from a god named Suwa Myojin in his dream.
There was a legend about this special helmet. When a samurai wore it to battle, he would always win. Whenever a samurai wore the helmet, 808 foxes would appear to protect the samurai from danger. The foxes posed as servants from the gods. A miracle would happen when he was in trouble. However, Kenshin borrowed and kept it at Suwa castle, even though it was a very important treasure to Takeda. It was the beginning of the fight between them. Around that time, a young man called Suisaku was living and working at Suwa castle which was Kenshin’s home as gardener.
Suisaku was trying to return the helmet back to Takeda. Suisaku was Takeda’s son. He disguised himself as a gardener to trick Kenshin to return the helmet to Takeda. His real name was Katsuyori but Kenshin only knew by the name Suisaku. One day, Kenshin’s daughter, Yaegaki Hime was asked to steal the helmet for Suisaku. At that time, she was supposed to have an arrangement marriage to Katsuyori( Suisaku) When she realized that it was her fiancée Katsuyori, instead of Suisaku ( the gardener), she fell in love with him. (During that time, there were arrangement marriages and couples didn’t meet each other until their wedding ceremony) Later, Kenshin promoted Suisaku to Samurai from a gardener. However, he noticed that he was Katsuyori. So, he sent him to the battle base in Shiojiri to have him killed. He also sent an assassin after him. Princess Yaegaki felt grief when she discovered the news and wanted to tell Katsuyori.
Later that evening, she decided to find Katsuyori. But the lake was frozen and she couldn’t use a boat. She wouldn’t be able to catch up with Katsuyori because she couldn’t run fast.
“I can’t stand here and wait for them to kill him.” She thought.
“I want to have wings”
“I want to fly”
She instinctively reached for the helmet, and suddenly fire appeared and she was able to see around the lake and a new road appeared for her to cross.
Katsuyori was saved. Later, Takeda and Kenshin made peace, and Princess Yaegaki and Katsuyori got married and live happily ever after.

Emily made this doll. This doll is her second doll. It's very beautiful!! Eveyone made beautiful dolls.
